6 Steps to Prevent Toenails from Breaking

Thickened, unsightly toenail is something anyone doesn’t want to experience. This happens as a sign of poor blood circulation to the nail area. This is also very common among senior citizens as a side effect of aging. Other causes of thick toenails are injury and toenail fungus. Whatever the cause is, these thick toenails are difficult to trim or cut. Therefore to avoid damaging or breaking your toenails by trying to chip away at them with a manicure scissors or a nail clipper, you can soften them first before cutting. Here are steps on how to soften thick toenails

Soften Thick Toenails

Step # 1: Prepare the tub.

Pour a gallon of warm water into the bathtub, deep basin or dishpan. Put 2 ½ tablespoons of table salt for each gallon of warm water in the bathtub.

Step # 2: Soak your feet into the mixture you have prepared.

Soak your feet for around 10-30 minutes depending on how thick your toenails are. The thicker your toenails, the longer they should be soaked. If they are already sufficiently soft, you can stop soaking.

Step # 3: Apply softening cream.

Upon removing your feet from the water, pat them dry with a towel. Apply a softening cream to your toenails as wells. You can now cut your toenails while they are still soft. You can buy the toenail softening cream at any drug stores. Have your hard toenails trimmed to avoid splitting. If your toenails cannot be softened with soaking and softening cream, consult your podiatrist.

Step # 4: Consider Vicks Vaporub as an alternate to the procedure you have used above.

This is one of the most popular and common home cures for thick toenails and even some podiatrists recommend it to their patients. Just apply Vicks Vaporub to the affected toenails for at least two times a day. You can apply it better in the morning and at the evening before slipping into a pair of socks. Some apply hydrogen peroxide first before applying Vicks Vaporub. This can be a good substitute for prescription medications once this product works well with you.

Step # 5: Try tea tree oil.

The tree oil is considered an essential oil since it contains antibacterial and antifungal properties. You can apply this oil two times a day onto the affected toenail. Some people dilute this tea tree oil with olive oil since there are cases that using tea tree oil alone can cause skin irritation. Use 4 ounces of olive oil to mix with every ounce of tea tree oil. Never use tea tree oil internally or cannot be taken by mouth.

Step # 6: If you want, you can also use white vinegar.

Using white vinegar is one favorite natural remedy for thick toenails. Just dip a cotton swab or a Q-tip into the vinegar and rub to the affected toenails. You can do this process two times a day. You can clip your toenails and file off the top layers before applying the vinegar. You can also mix an equal amount of white vinegar and water and have your feet soak into the mixture.

You have all the stuff to use in order to soften thick toenails. You can create your own simple blends from natural ingredients and other medications available in your homes. If you want to make sure you are doing things the right way, you may also consult your podiatrist.
