Healthy and strong nails can be achieved by eating a proper diet. Lack of protein can make nails brittle and dry. Onychoschizia is the medical term for nails that are weak and brittle. This condition of the nails can also be the result of some medical illnesses. But most frequently onychoschizia is usually the cause of the nails repeatedly getting wet and dry that’s why brittle nails are common to nurses, doctors and house cleaners. Here is how you can treat weak nails.
Tip #1: Know the cosmetics you are using.
Overuse of nail cosmetics and chemicals can cause brittle nails also. Try massaging the cuticle area to increase the circulation thus encouraging nail growth. Remember to wear gloves when dealing with harsh chemicals. In addition, treat your nails a manicure once a week to maintain a good healthy hands and nails. You can also try the following preventive and at home remedies to treat your weak nails.
Tip #2: Remove nail polish accordingly.
Use cotton swab dip in a nail polish remover to remove any old nail polish on your nails. Soak your nails in a small bowl of warm soapy water for around 5 minutes to soften your cuticles and at the same time rinses the nail polish remover.
Tip #3: Use cuticle cream.
You must apply cuticle cream at the base of your nails and massage the cuticles. Use an orange stick to gently push your cuticles. Do not cut your cuticles.
Tip #4: File them properly.
File your nails and shape them into rounded ovals and make sure that they have the same length. After filing, massage your hands using a rich hand cream then wrap them with a plastic wrap leaving on at least 30 minutes.
Tip #5: Use vegetable oil.
Upon the removal of the wrap, rub some light vegetable oil onto your hands and with the use of a nail buffer, buff your nails to give them natural shine. Buffing also helps increase circulation which results to healthier nails. To finish the treatment, apply clear nail hardener to keep your nails strong and assists with their growth.
Tip #6: Keep your nails short.
Always keep weak nails short and for best results. Trim them after your bath or after soaking them for 15 minutes.
Tip #7: Protect your hands when doing some chores.
Wear rubber gloves every time you do some household chores like washing the dishes, doing the laundry, scrubbing down the bathroom and when gardening. This will protect your nails and hands from harsh chemicals that can cause your nails dry.
Tip #8: Know more about the products you are buying.
Read and understand the labels of nail products well since there are some ingredients that can dry out your nails and at the same time irritate the skin. Don’t overuse nail polish remover.
Tip #9: Eat healthy.
Lastly, you need to eat a healthy diet. The Mayo Clinic and AOCD said that taking biotin supplement is beneficial to weak nails. However, you have to wait 6 months before you notice results and this does not work for all says the AOCD.
Apart from all these tips, the Mayo Clinic advises to moisturize your nails after they have been in water. Likewise, the American Academy of Dermatology suggests that you have to contact your physician if you notice any nail color and shape changes, ridges in your nails, if there are black or white lines or if the surrounding area of the nails is swollen and painful.
