Nails are a simple part of the body that protect our sensitive fingers and toes. However, they can also get sick just like the other parts of our body. Fungus and bad hygiene are usually the cause of nail infections. Aside from these, you can also acquire infectious germs from pools, spas or from sharing the same tools in cleaning your nails. The bad thing about getting a nail infection is that the treatment can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months depending upon the severity of the problem. Here are few easy tips on how to safely treat nail infections.
Tip #1: Gather the materials you need.
Prepare all the necessary materials such as nail clipper, pure tea tree oil, cotton swabs, apple cider vinegar, warm water and lavender oil. You will also need a basin, clean towel, grape fruit seed extract, pure oregano oil, olive oil, Vick’s vapor rub.
Tip #2: Use tea tree oil and other essential oils.
First you need to clip your nails with a clean nail clipper. Get a cotton swab and pour enough amount of pure tea tree oil to the infected area. You should repeat the procedure at least 3 times a day then get a basin and mix 2 quarts warm water, 1 cup apple cider vinegar and at least 10 drops of lavender oil. Make sure that the size of the basin is big enough to immerse your feet. Infected nails should be immersed for at least 20 minutes every day. Dry the nails and the feet using clean towel. The solution you created will help to balance of the skin. By doing this, it helps in the reduction of infection and increases the resistance against fungi attack and similar infection.
Tip #3: Use a mixture of lavender and tea tree oil.
Mix an equal part of lavender oil and tea tree oil and dip it in the infected nail using cotton swab for at least 2 times a day. Mix 100 drops of grape fruit seed extract in half full glass of water. You can buy the extract from a local grocery store. Apply the extract on your infected nails using cotton swab 2 times a day.
Tip #4: Use oregano oil.
You can also use pure oregano oil on the infected nails twice daily. If it is strong for you or if you feel a sting, dilute it with a few drop of olive oil and cover the nail completely using sterile gauze so that the solution is absorbed into the skin. Oils have a deep penetrating power that reaches the nail bed.
Tip #5: Use Vick’s.
Using Vick’s Vapor rub can also be used to treat infected nails. The oil present in the product can act as a strong anti-fungal ointment and help speed up the treatment. This is also known to stop fungus from growing but will not eliminate the infection. You need to continuously apply until the infected nail grows out and new ones take place.
After trying all these remedies and they still do not heal the infection, make an appointment with a doctor immediately. Nail infections may worsen if left untreated. You may also have medical conditions that are the cause of complications. Always follow the doctor’s prescription.
