Nail fungus is an infection caused by several microorganisms that eat the keratin incorporated in the nails. This infection starts as a small white spot underneath the nail and then spreads causing the nail to thicken. This can also be detected by a progressive discoloration of the root nail becoming yellow or dark in color.
The fact that the fungi live under the nail which is a hard tissue, makes it difficult to remedy fungal nail infections without proper treatment. One more thing, this disgusting infection often reappears after a successful treatment. Try the following ways to stay away from this nasty fungal nail infection.
Tip 1 – Take Prescription Medications
Your doctor may prescribe the following antifungal medications to treat the nail infection and prevent further spread: Itraconazole (Sporanox); Terbinafine (Lamisil); and Fluconazole (Diflucan). These medications are said to be more effective than those over-the-counter remedies.
These drugs should be taken for six to twelve weeks but it takes 4 month’s time more for them to be effective. These do not eliminate fungus but instead help grow a healthy new nail. The side effects of such medications are mild rash and liver damage. Therefore it is very important to let your doctor know what medical conditions and medications you are currently taking to know whether the antifungal medications do not interfere with them.
Tip 2 – Use Nail Lacquers
If one has a disease that does not permit the use of antifungal medications, the doctor will prescribe an antifungal nail lacquer instead. Like the nail polish, the antifungal lacquer is applied on the nail and skin that surrounds it. The nail lacquer is known as ciclopirox (Penlac), and it should be used for 7 consecutive days after which you should remove it with the use of alcohol. At the start of the next week, you can begin with the application process again. This treatment will last in a year but there’s no guarantee about the effectiveness.
Tip 3 – Combine Treatments
For a fast recovery of the fungal nail infections, the doctor may recommend a combination of taking an oral medication together with an over-the-counter topical medication. This topical medication is applied to the nail as well as its surrounding skin and absorbed into the nail which causes the reduction of crumbling and discoloration of the skin.
Tip 4 – Use Natural Remedies for Fungal Nail Infections
You can also treat fungal nail infection by the use of natural remedies. One natural remedy is the use of 1 cup of apple cider vinegar mixed with 2 quarts of warm water in a basin. Soak the affected nail into the mixture. Another remedy is the oregano oil. This also has antifungal properties. First, dilute the oregano oil in olive oil or aloe. The oil combination is then applied to the affected area with the use of a toothbrush or Q-tip. Apply daily until the fungal infection disappears.
Tip 5 – Try Home Remedies
The following are some home remedies to get rid or to minimize a nail fungus: apple cider vinegar; Vicks Vaporub; and hydrogen peroxide. This has been tried by people for centuries. However the effectiveness of these home remedies depends on each individual, but what is good about them is their availability, low price and have no side effects.
These are tips to consider if you want a remedy for fungal nail infections. Any of these treatments may work for you. There is no harm in trying.
