Ingrown toenail is the condition in which your nail is digging into your skin and feels very painful. Tip # 1: Wear loose fitting shoes

Tip # 2: Soak your foot in an Epsom salt solution
This method will help draw out any possible infection and also can relieve pain. You can use room temperature water or a little bit warmer to soak your sore toe for 15 minutes two times a day. Massage your nail gently to help relieve inflammation and help blood circulation as well. Then dry your foot completely after each soak. Keep your foot always dry except when soaking.

The application of antibiotic cream can relieve the pain and inflammation. You can apply the cream anytime of the day or just after you soaked your foot in the Epsom solution. The antibiotic cream can be bought over the counter or at a local pharmacy or grocery store.
Tip # 4: Try treatments found over-the-counter
You can take an over-the-counter pain relieving medication like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. To prevent infection, rub your toe with antibiotic ointment. Use Band-aid or bandage to cover your sore toe for protection.
Tip # 5: Remember to trim your nails properly.
Do not cut off the nail yourself because this can cause further irritation. Use a small nail file to pull the skin gently away from the nail and avoid hurting the toe.
Tip # 6: Provide cushion to the skin in between your toes.
Put tiny pieces of clean, moist cotton between the ingrown toenail and the skin to separate them and provide a little cushion to the skin. You must soak the cotton in water or into an antiseptic cleanser first.
Tip # 7: Check for signs of infection.
Check your toe every day if there are signs of infection. You may not know it but redness, swelling or an increased pain is an indication of ingrown toenails.
Tip # 8: Visit your podiatrist.
Visit your podiatrist immediately if there are signs of infections or if your ingrown toenail keeps coming back. The podiatrist can perform a small surgical procedure where he can remove permanently the ingrown corner of the nail.
Prevention is better than cure so before your toenails get into your skin you must do something. Cut your toenails correctly and buy footwear the fits on your toes properly.
