Ingrown toenail is when the edges of the toenail grow into the soft skin of the toes. This is very common and it is a painful condition and the worst is it can be infected easily. There are some remedies you can follow to avoid infection with ingrown toenail. However diabetic persons and others with other infections or immune problems are advised to consult the doctor immediately when this happens. For those of you with no health conditions, you may use the following remedies to avoid infection with your ingrown toenails.
Tip #1: Know what you need.
In this procedure you will need warm water, salt, antibiotic ointment, clean toenail clippers and orange stick. These are used to prevent the infection from bothering you.
Tip #2: Soak your feet in a warm salty water.
If there is any pain you feel and you notice a slight redness along the side of your toe, you have an ingrown toenail. You must therefore soak your affected foot in a solution of warm salty water. This will then soften your skin and draw out the infection. Dry your foot thoroughly specially your toes.
Tip #3: Use an orange stick.
With the use of orange stick, you may then lift up the portion of the toenail that is embedded in your skin. Get your nail clippers and trim this part of the toenail.
Tip #4: Use an ointment.
Apply a thin coat of antibiotic ointment on the affected area and be sure to keep your feet clean and dry always.
Tip #5: Remember some more tips.
Cut your toenails straight across. Toenails that are cut too short or rounded at the corners are the common cause of ingrown toenails. Always wear shoes that fit. Shoes that are too small can also cause ingrown toenails. Consult your doctor at once if the pain does not improve.
Tip #6: Know another way to avoid infection with ingrown toenails.
Pierce the affected area carefully. Scratch and pick slowly with the use of sterilized needle so as to avoid the feeling of pain. Soak the foot in salty water for around 15 minutes so as to soften the tissue and squeeze the pus out from the piercing. Apply antiseptic cream on the infected area and then put a plaster with a bandage for two to three hours. Remove the antiseptic bandage and then soak your toe in salty water again while pressing around to squeeze out pus. You can repeat the procedure for about three weeks until your infected toenails are healed.
Tip #7: Try another solution.
You can also mix 50% vinegar and 50% isopropyl alcohol which you can use to apply on and between toes. You can also rub around the ankles and calves to avoid the spread of bacterial and fungal infection. You can also use peroxide to wash your toes.
Avoiding ingrown toenails and the infection that comes with them is possible using some basic elements you see at home. You may also use over-the-counter products if you wish. The most important thing to remember above all is to pay attention to the problem at its onset to avoid further complications.
