Step # 1: Prepare your fingers.

Fill a basin with warm water, soapy water and soak your fingers in a minute to soften your cuticles. To have a better feeling, apply lotion or cream on to your hands and fingers. After a few minutes, dry off your hands with a cotton cloth and the nails with a bit of gauze.

Step # 2: Prepare the nail polish.

Gently roll the nail polish bottle with your two palms so as to mix the small metal balls with the polish before applying. Remember not to shake the bottle strongly because this can create bubbles and might transfer to your fingernails.

Step # 3: Begin the process on how to apply nail polish professionally.

Dip the brush inside the nail polish bottle and wipe the excess nail polish off on the rim of the bottle to avoid applying too much polish on the nail.

Step # 4: Start from the base of the nail.

As you begin at the base of the nail, paint one stripe down to the middle of your nail. Paint another stroke down to the left side of the stripe and another stroke down to the right side of the stripe.

Step # 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4.

Again, dip your brush to the nail polish bottle and repeat the procedure for every nail. Paint first at the middle and then on both sides of it. If ever you miss a small spot, you can cover it on the second coating. Don’t try to fix on your first coating.

Step # 6: Apply a second coat on your nails.

You can now apply your second coating after you finish painting each nail. This is to get the desired color and to cover up the one you missed. This will also make the nail color last longer. You can begin with the first nail from where you started the first coat.

Step # 7: Apply clear nail polish.

For a shiner look, apply a clear nail polish as a top coat to each nail. You should follow the same procedure as you apply the nail polish. This will not only give your manicure a professional look but also give the nails lasting protection. Use a Q tip to clean any mess on the sides to end up the manicure.

Professionals have the same procedure as what were mentioned here. The only difference is that they have formal education of doing it and had more practice. They have learned to control hand movements. Anyway if you continue doing it by yourself, you will learn to apply nail polish professionally.
